The United States of America secured their place at Tokyo 2020 as the top-ranked team from the Americas zone outside the world's top four nations. They are competing on the Olympic stage for the first time since 2004 in Athens.

The US team's only podium finish at the Olympic Games came in the form of a bronze medal at the 1932 Games in Los Angeles. They were eliminated by France at the quarterfinal stage in their last appearance in 2004, and finished the tournament ranked sixth following classification matches against the People's Republic of China and Ukraine.

The United States of America have claimed two medals at the world championships, including gold at the 2012 edition of the tournament in Kiev, Ukraine. Since then they have only achieved one top-10 finish at the tournament, ranking eighth in 2018. They finished the 2019 World Championships in Budapest in 14th position following a tight round of 16 defeat at the hands of the Chinese team.

At continental level, they have won 15 Pan American Games medals from 17 appearances since 1951, but could only finish fourth at the 2019 Games in Lima. The US team did, however, win gold and silver at the 2018 and 2019 Pan American championships, respectively.
