General Interest

General
The Korean men's epee team will be making their eighth appearance at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, since their debut in Los Angeles in 1984. They qualified for Tokyo 2020 as the top-ranked team from the Asia and Oceania zone outside the world's top four nations.

The Republic of Korea are yet to win an Olympic medal, with their best result a fourth-place finish at the 2000 Games in Sydney. At Rio 2016, they were defeated by Hungary 45-42 in the quarterfinals before going on to beat Venezuela and Switzerland in the classification rounds to secure a ranking of fifth.

The Korean team have won silver medals at three of the five editions of the world championships since 2014. However, they dropped to sixth place at the 2019 World Championships in Budapest, following defeat to the eventual gold medallists France at the quarterfinal stage.

In 2018 the Republic of Korea's run of three consecutive Asian Games titles ended, as they finished with bronze behind the People's Republic of China and gold medallists Japan. Their last title at the Asian championships came in 2017, but they did manage to win silver at the 2019 edition behind the People's Republic of China.
