In February 2017 she suffered a tear to the patellar tendon in her knee. She returned to competition to qualify for the 2017 Pan American Championships in Montreal, QC, Canada. She had to withdraw from the championships, however, when she fell off her bicycle on the way to training and suffered concussion. She started working with sports psychologist Heidi Malo after admitting that missing out on qualification for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and an injury-interrupted 2017 led to a loss of confidence. She had also experienced episodes of anxiety and chest contractions during training and in competitions. "I cried so much when I didn't make it to Rio. I think I cried for two weeks. Then, we were not even a year from the start of [2020] Olympic qualification and I had no confidence and didn't like fencing anymore. It was a disaster. I don't know what I had, but it felt as if my fencing mask was taking my breath away. But I've worn my mask a million times, so I knew that wasn't the problem.
