He was troubled by an arm injury in early 2017. (fina.org, 03 Mar 2017)

Surgery on an elbow injury led to him missing the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. During the recovery process he suffered damage to his long thoracic nerve, which meant he was unable to lift his arm above his shoulder. He had an operation on the problem in December 2014, and returned to competition at the 2015 Grand Prix in Bolzano, Italy. (swimming.org, 21 Feb 2016; cambridge-news.co.uk, 09 Feb 2016)

He initially had swimming lessons at Cambridge Parkside Pool, before taking an interest in their diving boards. "I was about seven or eight when I started coming here, I came for some swimming lessons, saw the diving and thought I might give it a go." (cambridge-news.co.uk, 13 Apr 2018)

General Interest

General
TOKYO PREPARATION
He switched to the 3m synchronised springboard from the 10m synchronised platform in 2018, and feels that the postponement of the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo to 2021 has been beneficial for him. "I've only been doing springboard for two years [speaking in 2020] and most of our rivals have been doing it their whole lives. An extra year until the Olympics is more time for me to get better and more time to get used to the springboard. It's a blessing in disguise to get prepared. I do miss going up on the platform [10m]. Technically, it's easier for me and my body knows it better than the springboard. But when I jumped from that height I had big problems with triceps and shoulder injuries." (sports.yahoo.com, 26 Oct 2020)

NEW PARTNERSHIP
In February 2019 he paired up with Olympic gold medallist Jack Laugher for the 3m synchronised springboard event. "We struggled to begin with because it's hard not just being with a new partner but I transitioned from the platform to the springboard as well and they are completely different events. I'm getting to grips with the springboard. It's just that training is different and competing is different but I have a good mentor in Jack, who is one of the best springboard divers in the world."
