General Interest

General
The United States of America won silver at the Olympic Games in 2012 and 2016, losing the gold medal final to Great Britain on both occasions. At Rio 2016, the US team's time in the first round was a world record over 4000m but this was immediately superseded by Great Britain in the following heat. The British team then set another world record in the gold medal race, their third of the Games, to beat the US by more than two seconds.

The US team have won four of the last five titles on offer at the world championships though, which includes victories over their British rivals in the gold medal race in 2018 and 2020. They also claimed gold in 2016 and 2017, and their record of four world championship titles puts them second on the overall medal table.

The United States of America won gold at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, beating Canada in the final. They had finished in the silver medal position behind their North American rivals four years earlier at the 2015 Games in Toronto.
