Elisa Balsamo and Letizia Paternoster won bronze at the 2020 World Championships in Berlin in their first appearance together at a major senior international tournament.

Balsamo is the current European champion, having claimed gold alongside Vittoria Guazzini in 2020 in Plovdiv. Paternoster competed with Maria Giulia Confalonieri at the European championships in three consecutive years from 2017 to 2019, achieving a best finish of fourth in 2019 in Apeldoorn.
