PUTTING OFF RETIREMENT
He considered retiring from the sport after it was announced that the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo would be postponed. However, following discussions with coaching staff and teammates from the national team he decided to keep going until 2021 and compete in Tokyo, where he hopes to win his fourth Olympic gold medal in team pursuit. "I did think quite strongly about calling it, very soon after the postponement announcement. We had a big Skype call between all the riders and coaches 24 hours after and it could have gone either way. We were realistic. I am 35 now and I will be 36-and-a-half next summer. I have been one of the best team pursuiters in the world for a long time now but that is going to become more difficult as you approach your late 30s. But we had a good conversation about how we could best make use of this time and after that, I was like, 'You know what, if we are careful and we can plan this well, why not? I still think it's doable.' I have always liked a challenge so we will give it a go." (dailymail.co.uk, 01 Apr 2020)

ACADEMY
