"It was a family sport on dad's side. I played a lot of rugby, cricket, football as a kid and got into triathlons. I swam and rode well but even if a bear was chasing me, I couldn't run to save myself. So I stuck to what I was good at and did more and more riding." (cyclingnewzealand.nz, 10 Jun 2020)

General Interest

General
REPRESENTING NEW ZEALAND
He began his international career competing for Australia, but switched to representing New Zealand in 2018 after he was told he was not in the Australian team's plans for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. He qualifies for New Zealand through his mother. "The main reasoning given was the opinion that I would not improve and would not be good enough for the Tokyo Olympics. It was pretty black and white, there was a clear opportunity for me to still be considered for the Olympic Games [with New Zealand] so I jumped at it. The major question was whether I had the time and resources to make it happen. It's a lengthy process with a lot of paperwork. I have a lot of people to thank for their help in the process." (SportsDeskOnline, 15 Apr 2020; sbs.com.au, 26 Feb 2020; pezcyclingnews.com, 28 Jan 2019)

ROAD TO TRACK
He competed in road cycling in Europe until 2016, when he decided to switch his focus to track cycling. "I decided I would not ride around Europe anymore. It was not where I was happiest. I was watching the Rio Olympics on TV in my apartment in Girona [Spain]. I thought, 'Well I used to be quite good at that as a junior'. I came home [to Australia] and they were building an angled velodrome there at the time. So I decided to throw a leg over and race at the national championships in 2017. I won it and got picked up by the Australian team." He has since held professional road racing contracts and signed for the MEIYO CCN Pro Cycling Team for 2021. WEDDING DELAY
He had planned to get married in September 2020, but delayed the ceremony after the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo were postponed. (cyclingnewzealand.nz, 10 Jun 2020)

COACH
He is also a cycling coach and launched his own coaching company in 2019. (LinkedIn profile, 01 Sep 2019)
