In October 2015 he was involved in a serious crash while training ahead of a World Cup event in Cali, Colombia. He lost control of his bike and went through a guard rail, smashing into a post at 80 km/h. The crash resulted in two broken lumbar vertebrae, a broken nose, broken teeth, head lacerations and a dislocated shoulder. He was back on the bike within two weeks. "I turned my head at the last second and missed the post with my head by a few millimetres or would have probably killed me. The crash was so hard that I wasn't thinking about the Olympics as much as being able to walk."
