He was involved in a crash on stage 13 of the 2021 Tour de France. He was taken to hospital with heavy abrasions on his back, right hip and elbow and required stitches, and was forced to abandon the race. (cyclingnews.com, 10 Jul 2021)

In October 2019 he underwent heart surgery to treat a permanently open foramen ovale, a small opening between the two atria of the heart which usually closes at birth, in order to reduce the chances of a future stroke, having suffered a minor stroke in March 2018. (cyclingweekly.com, 16 Nov 2019)
