CYCLING ACADEMY REJECTION
Ahead of the 2011 season, he and his twin brother Simon both applied to the British Cycling Olympic Academy. Simon was selected, while he was not. He decided to move to France, supported by the Dave Rayner Fund. He spent two years based in Troyes, then a year in Belfort. "It wasn't because I wasn't good enough, but I just didn't have the results to prove myself. I wasn't devastated because I kind of knew it wasn't going to happen. I knew I could do something but I wasn't keen on staying in England. Racing in Britain didn't suit my characteristics at all. I was still pretty good on a track, and pretty quick for a small guy, but I'm best going uphill. There aren't any races here that finish on climbs." (cyclingnews.com, 07 Jan 2016)

CYCLING TWINS
His move to INEOS Grenadiers in 2021 meant that he was not on the same team as his brother Simon for the first time since the twins turned professional in 2014. "It'll be funny [racing against Simon]. If he starts attacking I'll just laugh at him, but it is what it is. We're both professionals and we both want to win. It's not like it's going to cause any issues. May the best man win." (cyclingnews.com, 20 Feb 2021)
