A foot injury put an end to his career as a middle distance runner, so he began cycling as a way of maintaining his fitness. He got involved in local group rides and competitions, where he realised he had potential in the sport. He then decided he would have another go at being a professional athlete following encouragement from coach Paulo Saldanha. "I first met Paulo in 2013, and he immediately took me under his wing.
