"I was involved in other sports at first. I remember how I came to boxing, I was beaten on the very first day, and I left. When I was 12 years old, the daughter of my future coach [Gumar Nurullin], who was also a coach, came to our school and invited everyone to the then popular cycling group. Since there were a lot of applicants, a selection was organised, it was necessary to run a circle in a certain time. I did not pass this test and did not get into the group. This angered me so much that every morning before classes at school I began to run in a forest park, to practise on horizontal bars. Three months of hard training brought results - I began to represent the school in running competitions and even took a prize place. Then I was admitted to the cycling group without any problems."
