His father Stephen Roche was a professional road cyclist and won gold in the road race at the 1987 World Championships, as well as winning the Tour de France and Giro d'Italia in the same year. His cousin Dan Martin has represented cycling teams on the World Tour and competed for Ireland in the road race at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. His father Neil represented Great Britain in road cycling at the Olympic Games in 1980 and 1984. As a schoolboy he played rugby for the prestigious Blackrock College in Dublin, Ireland, and had set his mind on becoming a hotel or restaurant manager rather than following in his father's footsteps.
