Concussion caused her to miss the 2018 World Championships in Chengdu, People's Republic of China. (bbc.com, 05 Nov 2019)

She first began riding a BMX at age 16, but at the time she was mostly focusing on riding scooters. "I got a BMX bike for my 16th birthday to mess around on. I picked things up pretty quickly but stuck to scooters for a long time. Then when I was 19 turning 20, I decided to switch to BMX. So I had a bit of a foundation for starting, but I switched when I was 20." (tokyo2020.org, 11 Aug 2020; bbc.com, 05 Nov 2019)

"I got into extreme sports by riding scooters - which is a bit of a gateway sport. They're quite small to throw around, so it was a bit of an easier sport for me to do. People at high school would call me stupid names like 'Scoots McGee' and people just didn't 'get me'. They thought I was weird. I suppose everyone in this sport is a little different, but I loved being at the skate park where there were other kids like me who lived for that adrenaline rush, pushed their limits, had fun and liked getting hot and sweaty. I'm definitely not a 'girly-girl'. You get a rush when you do something dangerous and pull it off." (tokyo2020.org, 11 Aug 2020; thebloombmx.com, 31 Jan 2020; bbc.com, 05 Nov 2019)

Winning gold at the 2019 European Championships in Cadenazzo, Switzerland, and bronze at 2019 World Championships in Chengdu, People's Republic of China, which earned her a place at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. (tokyo2020.org, 11 Aug 2020; Facebook page, 13 Oct 2019)

FROM CHEF TO ATHLETE
After she left college, she worked in a Mexican restaurant close to her family home in Manchester, England, before focusing on BMX fully in 2018 after she was selected by British Cycling. "I started as a glass collector, then I was a food runner and when people began talking to me and realising I was a bit of a tomboy they thought I'd do well in the kitchen. I had some pretty fun times and although it was never meant to be permanent I was working as a cook in various restaurants for about three years. I was sweating it out in the kitchen for over 40 hours a week and barely had any time or energy to ride, but then the sport went into the Olympics and last year [2018] I was picked up by British Cycling. I had the choice of, 'Do I want to work these crazy hours and not live a very good lifestyle, or follow my dream of doing BMX?' My lifestyle before this was not the lifestyle of an elite athlete. After being a chef for three years I was on minimal sleep, poor diet and never working out, then I had a wake-up call in 2018 after competing in France. British Cycling know how to make champions and I realised I needed to buckle down, make changes, get more sleep, improve my diet and hit the gym." (tokyo2020.org, 11 Aug 2020; bbc.com, 05 Nov 2019)
