General Interest

General
MUSICIAN
He teaches guitar and piano. He studied music with a focus on jazz at university, and aspires to become a session [studio] musician once his sporting career is over, after realising he was unable to do both at the same time. "The music teaching just pays the rent, and the four eggs for breakfast, never-ending food bill. It does help me get overseas. I was sitting down playing guitar, studying for eight hours a day, and then trying to train [for canoe sprint] three or four hours as well. I just pushed the limit too much and I slipped a disc in my back [in 2015] which was not fun - I was way too young to be slipping discs." In 2017 he took some time away from canoeing to visit North America and "chase the music". He says he has used the discipline that he learned through music to help with his sport. "When I have finished training in the water, that's it. But with music, you have to continue at it to achieve."
