She began paddling in 2008 after discovering the sport through a school assembly. (wsportalliance.com, 25 Jun 2021; britishcanoeing.org.uk, 01 Jan 2021)

"I have always been sporty, but never really found one I was particularly passionate about until I was a few years into canoeing. After discovering it through a school assembly, I initially hated the sessions, mainly the falling in and having to swim to the side. But when I gained the skill of balancing in the boat and began to develop some speed I fell in love and have never looked back." (wsportalliance.com, 25 Jun 2021)

"It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog. You might not be the biggest or strongest in the field but if you believe in yourself and want it enough, then there is little to stop you." (wsportalliance.com, 25 Jun 2021)

WORKING ON PSYCHOLOGY
In the lead-up to the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo she placed more focus on the mental side of competition. "A big thing for me this year [2021] has been about working on my psyche and my mindset. I made an effort to get in contact with members of support staff that have helped me bridge that gap. I think I'm quite a consistent paddler, and while I know I always have the capacity to improve the physical side of things I knew the mental side of things was going to be the tough thing. I'm not there yet, but I've never raced as calmly as I am doing now. I've seen it make a difference in training, and now I'm seeing it in my racing." (heraldscotland.com, 18 Apr 2021)

MOVING BACK TO SCOTLAND
During the COVID-19 pandemic she moved back to Scotland from Nottingham, England, to live with her parents. "To be able to go back home from my flat to my parents' with a garden and a garage, I could put the kayak machine in and it was quite luxurious compared to what I had before. I had some perspective on why I was really doing it. Seeing my parents and my brother was great. They are the people I am doing this for, so it was a huge motivation."
