He first tried paddling at age 10 at Musselburgh Lagoons in Scotland. "It is quite hard to get started in canoeing in Scotland, especially for younger guys coming up. I was lucky to go to an after-school club and I had a club close to my house where I could practise and train." (news.stv.tv, 04 Jan 2020; canoeicf.com, 01 Sep 2015; inthewinningzone.com, 01 Dec 2008; click-let.com, 05 Jun 2015)

He became interested in paddling at age nine after watching it on television during the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. "I went along to a local youth club who were running a trial kayaking week which I attended. I really enjoyed it so [I] kept going from there." OLYMPIC DREAM
Before the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo were postponed by a year, he travelled to Japan several times to compete and train, including on the canoe slalom course that will be used for the Games. "It has been a dream of mine since I was 10 years old to compete at the Olympic Games. For me my whole life is about sport and this [2020] was all set to be one of the biggest years of my life - for that to be put on hold was understandably difficult. I'd worked for 15 years to put myself in this position but with that all going on hold I've tried to take the positives. Another 12 months and I can't wait to be sitting on that start line at Tokyo 2020." (teamgb.com, 15 Jun 2020; news.stv.tv, 04 Jan 2020)

UNTAPPED SCOTTISH POTENTIAL
He believes that Scotland has a wealth of untapped canoeing talent that goes undiscovered due to a lack of training facilities. The closest internationally-recognised white water training centre is more than 300 miles away in Hertfordshire, England. "We [Scotland] deliver such fantastic results. You know, it's not like we have many full-time employed coaches. A lot of the coaching that goes on in Scotland is from volunteers who just absolutely love the sport. If we could get a really professional programme in place in Scotland, then I don't see why the guys who live up north would then have to travel down south to train, because it's a massive expense that goes into a lot of these guys having to come down for a week at a time just to train at the best white water centre in the country. And if we could have a white water centre up in Scotland, I think that would just raise our level massively." (news.stv.tv, 04 Jan 2020)
