He took part in a week-long kayaking camp while his parents returned to work during the summer holidays. "I really had no idea what I was getting into, my parents didn't either. There was something about that first group - out of the six athletes in that course, four of us went on to be national team. It is a race against the clock as you go down the whitewater. You have to use the water; it is more powerful than you are, it's stronger than you are, so the fastest way is to use the power of the water, I have always loved that. I have loved the sport right from the start." (olympic.ca, 22 Jun 2016; ottawasportspages.ca, 26 Jun 2020; ottawasun.com, 04 Feb 2021)
