He took part in a week-long kayaking camp while his parents returned to work during the summer holidays. "I really had no idea what I was getting into, my parents didn't either. There was something about that first group - out of the six athletes in that course, four of us went on to be national team. It is a race against the clock as you go down the whitewater. You have to use the water; it is more powerful than you are, it's stronger than you are, so the fastest way is to use the power of the water, I have always loved that. RETIREMENT PLAN
Speaking in 2021 he said he intends to retire from the sport after competing at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. "I'm at the end of my career. So I think, honestly, for me, the biggest thing in the moment I was thinking [when the 2020 Games were postponed] was, 'Oh wow, so I guess I'm not retiring this year [2020]. I've got one more year - I've got to keep training!' I've always thought the Tokyo Games would be my last, then I'd retire. That's still the plan. I definitely feel extraordinarily lucky, privileged and fortunate to compete in a sport. There is just a crazy amount of time on the road and living out of a suitcase and, you know, missing holidays, missing birthdays, missing family moments. All of that. So it certainly is a sacrifice you have to make to be able to compete at the world stage. I'm looking forward to having a little bit more time to spend in Canada and at home."
