He began paddling with his brother Liam at a young age on family holidays. At age seven he began solo slalom paddling. "We went on whitewater canoe trips since we were kids. At age 13 he joined the junior development programme of the Ottawa River Runners club in Ontario, Canada, along with his brother. "I had some amazing opportunities and training groups to help develop my skills to the point where I was able to land a spot on the Canadian junior national team. After making the finals at the junior world championships in 2008, I decided this was something I loved doing and wanted to pursue it further."
