General Interest

General
The People's Republic of China qualified for their ninth Olympic appearance in Tokyo by topping Group B at the 2020 Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Belgrade, Serbia, winning all three of their matches against the Republic of Korea, Spain and Great Britain.

The Chinese team have managed two Olympic medals, beating Canada in the bronze medal match at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles and claiming silver in Barcelona in 1992 after defeat in the final to the Unified Team. At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro they could only manage one group phase win over Senegal, alongside four defeats to Canada, Serbia, Spain and the United States of America, which saw them finish the tournament ranked 10th from 12 teams.

At continental level the People's Republic of China are the most successful women's basketball team at the Asian Games. Having made the podium at every edition since 1974, they have amassed six gold, four silver and two bronze medals. They defeated the unified Korean team 71-65 for gold at the 2018 edition in Indonesia.

At the Asia Cup [formerly the Asia championship] the Chinese team have finished on the podium at 10 consecutive tournaments between 2001 and 2019, but have not won gold since 2011. As of 2019 their gold medal tally at the tournament is 11, one behind the Republic of Korea on 12. In 2019 they lost the final to Japan 71-68 after defeating the Republic of Korea in the semifinal.
