His father and brother both played the sport and his father helped run the local junior club, Elmbridge, in Walton upon Thames. "I didn't like it [badminton] at first. I was still playing football, tennis, athletics, all those sports." He took a break from the sport but was eventually lured back. "I don't really know how I was coaxed back to playing but I remember coming back and I could actually hit the shuttle from the far end of one side to the other end that I couldn't do before. In 2017 he and coach Stuart Wardell started a new training programme at Wimbledon Racquets & Fitness Club to help younger players making the transition to senior level.
