His father Liu Huisheng was a badminton player and has also coached the Beijing municipal women's badminton team. His mother Song Yuling has served as coach of the Beijing municipal women's swimming team. His older sister Liu Jing has represented the People's Republic of China in swimming, including at the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games.
