Her mother Karin Brandes represented Peru in swimming at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Her brothers Sebastian and Nicolas have both represented Peru in badminton at the Pan American championships. She grew up in sporty family, and initially took up swimming and gymnastics before switching to badminton. She decided to focus on badminton after winning the U11 competition at the 2007 Pan American Junior Championships in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. "When I entered the badminton hall, it caught my attention and ended up loving it. I won the championship [2007 Pan Am] and from then on I left swimming and gymnastics and focused only on badminton."
