The Swiss women's 4x400m team qualified for Tokyo through the world rankings, and are making their second Olympic appearance in the event. They first appeared at the 1992 Games in Barcelona, where they missed out on the final by one place, finishing ranked ninth overall after the heats.
Switzerland have competed in the event at three editions of the world championships, with a similarly large gap in time between their most recent appearances. After debuting in 1991, they appeared again in 1993 but would not return to the tournament until the 2019 edition in Doha where they finished ranked 14th fastest. They have made the final once in three appearances, finishing eighth in 1993 in Germany.
At the World Relays the Swiss team finished seventh in the final in 2019, but failed to progress from the heats at the 2021 edition where they finished ranked ninth, more than four seconds behind eighth-placed France.
