Tokyo 2020 sees the Netherlands make their second appearance at the Olympic Games. The first time they qualified for the Games was Rio 2016, where they finished sixth in their heat and did not progress to the final.

At the 2019 World Championships in Doha, the Dutch women secured their ticket to Tokyo by making the final. They finished last of the seven teams that posted an official result in the race. The 2017 edition of the tournament had seen them disqualified in the heats for a fault while recovering a dropped baton.

The Netherlands qualified fourth-fastest from the heats at the 2021 World Relays in Chorzow, and went on to finish fourth in the final.
