General Interest

General
Jamaica will be aiming for a second Olympic title in Tokyo, having won back-to-back silver medals in 2012 and 2016 behind the United States of America. In London they finished 0.59s behind the US team, while in Rio a margin of 0.35s separated the two. Jamaica's sole Olympic gold came at Athens 2004, where they finished an impressive 0.54s ahead of the Russian Federation. The only time Jamaica has failed to claim an Olympic medal since 1996 came at the 2008 Games in Beijing, where a botched baton exchange saw them fail to finish the final.

At the world championships Jamaica have won more medals in the event than any other nation, with a total of 15 - five of each colour - in 16 appearances. The US team, however, boast more gold medals in the event with seven world championship titles. Jamaica celebrated their fifth world title in 2019 in Doha, after finishing ahead of Great Britain and the US team.

Their rivalry with the US team was also on show at the 2019 World Relays in Yokohama, where Jamaica were beaten to victory by the US team by just 0.02s. The Jamaicans had previously claimed victory over the US team at the 2015 World Relays in Nassau. Neither team took part in the 2021 edition.
