Brazil secured the last spot for Tokyo via the world rankings in June 2021, courtesy of their performance at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru, where they won gold in a time of 43.04s.
Tokyo will be Brazil's fifth consecutive Olympic campaign after first appearing at the 2004 Games in Athens, where they failed to make the final by .06s behind Belarus. Four years later they crossed the line fourth at the 2008 Games, but were promoted to bronze in 2016 following the disqualification of the Russian team that had originally finished first in Beijing for an anti-doping violation. At London in 2012, Brazil finished last out of the seven teams that posted a result in the final.
As hosts of the 2016 Games, the Brazilian team were part of an historic situation when they were disqualified from their heat after Kauiza Venancio was found to have bumped US runner Allyson Felix just before the baton exchange zone. The US team filed a successful protest and were given a second chance to qualify for the final in an additional solo heat on their own, while Brazil were disqualified.
Brazil are yet to claim a medal at the world championships, and were disqualified from their heat at the most recent edition in 2019 for a lane infringement. It is a similar story at the World Relays, where they are yet to make the podium and were disqualified from their heat at the 2021 edition.
