Prior to Tokyo the Netherlands have only appeared at one Olympic Games, in 1980 in Moscow, where they failed to progress from the heats.

They are yet to compete in the event at the world championships, and qualified for Tokyo by making the final at the 2021 World Relays in Chorzow, Poland. They went on to win gold in the final, finishing exactly one second ahead of the Japanese team in second place.
