General Interest

General
Jamaica made their Olympic debut at the 1948 Games in London. Four years later they became the first team other than Great Britain and the United States of America to claim Olympic gold in the event, when they triumphed at the 1952 Games in Helsinki ahead of the second-placed US team.

Since their victory in 1952, the Jamaicans have added three Olympic silver medals and one bronze. They were beaten to gold by the US team in 1988 and 2016, while Nigeria claimed gold ahead of them at the 2000 Games in Sydney.

At the world championships the Jamaican team have won 10 medals in 17 appearances, but are still searching for their first title. Only the US team's 12 total world championship medals is higher than Jamaica's total medal count. At the 2019 World Championships in Doha, the Jamaicans were silver medallists for the seventh time as the US team won gold. They were runners-up behind the US team at the 2013 and 1995 editions as well.
