General Interest

General
Jamaica are the reigning Olympic champions in the men's 4x100m relay, having claimed gold at both the 2016 and 2012 Games. In 2012 they finished 0.20s ahead of runners-up the United States of America, while in Rio in 2016 they finished 0.33s ahead of surprise silver medallists Japan. Their winning time in Rio, however, was 0.43s slower than their gold medal performance in London four years earlier. Jamaica also crossed the line first at the 2008 Games in Beijing, but had their gold medal disqualified nearly 10 years later following Nesta Carter's anti-doping violation.

Prior to the 21st century, Jamaica claimed one Olympic medal in the event, a silver at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles behind the host nation. They have also finished fourth on a number of occasions.

At the world championships, Jamaica claimed four consecutive gold medals from 2009 to 2015, equalling the same record achieved by the US team from 1983 to 1991. They failed to make it five in a row, however, as Usain Bolt pulled up with a left leg injury some 60 metres from the finish line at the 2017 edition, in what would be his final race. Without Bolt, Jamaica failed to progress from the heats at the 2019 edition of the tournament in Gwangju.
