France's 21 Olympic appearances in the 4x100m relay is more than any other nation except for the United States of America, who have contested the event 23 times at the Games. Since France finished seventh in the inaugural men's 4x100m relay at the 1912 Games, they have won six Olympic medals starting with silver behind the US team in 1920, which remains their best result at the Games. France's five other Olympic medals are all bronze, including one from the last time the Games were held in Tokyo in 1964.
The French team's most recent Olympic podium finish came at the 2012 Games in London where they originally placed fourth, 0.04s behind Trinidad and Tobago. However, they were elevated to the bronze medal position in 2015 after the disqualification of the US team that originally finished second, due to Tyson Gay's anti-doping violation. France did not qualify from their heat at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro - one of only a few missed Olympic finals for the team.
At the world championships the French team have won less medals compared to their Olympic endeavours, but have fared marginally better in terms of their colour, with one gold to their name from the 2005 edition in Helsinki. Their other two medals, both silver, came in 1991 and 2011. Like their 1964 Olympic bronze medal, the 1991 world championship silver medal came on Japanese soil in Tokyo. At the most recent edition of the world championships in 2019, France did not manage to finish the final.
