His father was a soldier and died during the Sudanese civil war in 1999. James originally stayed in southern Sudan to raise cattle, but escaped the country at age 13 due to the danger of being kidnapped and forced to become a child soldier. He arrived in Kenya in 2002, and went to school at the Kakuma Refugee Camp in the north of the country. He began running in the camp, but did not have proper footwear. "We all got injuries because of the wrong shoes we had. Then we shared. If maybe you have two pairs of shoes, then you help the one that has none."
