Injuries to his left knee prevented him from competing at the Olympic Games in 2012 and 2016. He underwent surgery on the knee in March 2018 and missed the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, QLD, Australia. He was inspired to take up the sport after watching British triple jumper Jonathan Edwards win gold at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. "I thought it looked absolutely amazing - he was soaring through the air. So my grandad Ron Harper took me outside and taught me the principles of the hop, step and jump on the pavement and that's how it all started." (stokesentinel.co.uk, 17 Mar 2020)

RETURN FROM INJURY
In late 2018 he considered quitting the sport having undergone knee surgery earlier that year. "Coming back from injury was a difficult time. I was suffering with my mental health but people kept motivating me to get into the gym and that's what I needed. I wasn't able to jump and do what I wanted in training. There seemed no light at the end of the tunnel. I couldn't be bothered with it. But, as much as I was saying in my head I couldn't continue any more, I had unfinished business." Having spent time working as a personal trainer at a gym in Stoke-on-Trent, England, in 2019 he relocated to train at Loughborough University in England ahead of the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. "I took a really big risk and it's really paid off [speaking in March 2020]. Since moving there my personal best has increased by 53 centimetres. I've just got to stay injury-free, keep fit and ready, then I'm Tokyo-bound." (bbc.com, 01 Nov 2019; stokesentinel.co.uk, 17 Mar 2020)
