In early 2021, nine weeks before the British Olympic marathon trials, his right hand was crushed by a removal van while he was moving house. He required surgery involving the insertion of a metal plate into his hand. He was advised to take three weeks off running but instead continued to run in a lightweight cast. He recovered in time for the trials and met the qualifying standard for the 2020 Olympic Games. (athleticsweekly.com, 12 Apr 2021)

After struggling with an Achilles tendon injury for several years, in 2014 he opted to have surgery. Doctors warned that his running career could be over after the operation, as they feared they would have to completely sever and reattach the tendon. Some of the tendon was saved, but he continued to run with pain in his Achilles until 2020. (athleticsweekly.com, 12 Apr 2021)

He missed the 2011 World Championships in Daegu, Republic of Korea, with an Achilles tendon problem and a hernia. (dailymail.co.uk, 14 May 2012)

In the aftermath of his initial shin injury in 2004 he struggled with a series of problems including a torn calf, torn Achilles tendon, knee cartilage irritation, knee cap movement issues, a torn back muscle, and a quadricep injury. (runnerslife.co.uk, 22 May 2010)

A stress response in his shin in 2004 meant he could not run the following year and he almost quit the sport. He started again in 2006 but suffered from knee and back problems and it was not until 2010 that he could run for six full months without breaking down. "I have a checklist of warm-up habits to prepare for a race. I feel it's important to get your body and mind ready through a calming list to tick off so when I'm on the start line I feel ready and prepared for the challenge ahead." (on-running.com, 01 Apr 2017)

"In a sport which relies on no one but yourself when the going gets tough and empathy hard to find, I was once told, 'If it was easy everyone would be doing it'. It struck a chord that if I wanted to succeed I'll have to find it within myself the same as everyone else." (on-running.com, 01 Apr 2017)

INJURY STRUGGLES
After his Achilles tendon surgery in 2014, it was not until 2020 that he was able to run pain-free, and during this time he says he considered quitting the sport. "The doc and surgeon broke the news to me in a kind of, 'This is your career over' delivery. They didn't know categorically but they said, 'Sorry, Chris, this is bad'. I thought I have to either see this through until I find the 'holy grail of satisfaction', or I bin it. It was all on a healing curve throughout that time but there were periods when I didn't want to get out of bed in the morning because I knew it would hurt so much on my first steps." After his hand was crushed and needed surgery in early 2021, he was told to avoid running for three weeks, but continued as the British Olympic trials were approaching. "I was told that if I fell on it [his hand], it wasn't going to be good. If it got infected, it wasn't going to be good. It was snowing at the time, too. But I needed to take a gamble. I knew I had to get back running and I took full responsibility if anything happened to it. There are so many things like this that happen in an athlete's career and you have to find a way." (athleticsweekly.com, 12 Apr 2021)

BIG WEEK
The same week he became a father to son Theo in March 2021, he met the Olympic qualifying standard to compete at the 2020 Olympic Games. "Becoming a two-time Olympian and a dad in the space of a week took every ounce of who I am and I couldn't have rode a finer line. My career has had its fair share of stinkers but all those stinkers have added up to one of the greatest weeks of my life." (tokyo2020.org, 20 Apr 2021; Instagram profile, 01 Apr 2021)

EXPERIENCED COMPETITOR
He will compete at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo at age 40, 23 years after first representing his country at youth level. "Age is one of those strange things we put labels on. As much as I will be 40, I still want to go there and compete hard because I still take myself very seriously as an athlete and not just someone who is defying odds in a way."
