"I had joined the Air Training Corps at age 13 following in my brother's footsteps, and through that I got involved in a variety of different activities, including five-a-side [football], netball tournaments and athletics. At one competition, I entered the 100m, 200m, 4x100m [relay] and the long jump, and won them all. But I must have dominated the long jump because a coach on the sidelines noticed me, said I had talent, and would be happy to coach me." (athleticsweekly.com, 30 Oct 2019)

"I follow a three-day rollover cycle. It provides me with a solid framework with flexibility to adjust my programme to fit into where I am in the competition season. Some weeks this may mean I have high load and high intensity over five to six training days, whereas other weeks it may mean I only train three to four days in the week, with lower reps and sets on the track, in the sand pit and in the gym." "Enjoy it. Believe in yourself. Don't let anybody question your talent. Work hard. Work smart. Trust your coach, and your gut." (athleticsweekly.com, 30 Oct 2019)

General Interest

General
BUSINESS VENTURES
She owns two businesses based in Manchester, England. One is AMPLIFY Learning, through which she offers professional coaching, motivational speaking, and sports-centred educational days. The other is Manchester Tutors, a personal tutoring service. She set up the ventures in 2016 during her time out of the sport, and went on to combine them with her athletics career. "It's as busy as it sounds. It is a lot of juggling and sometimes I feel bad because I'm not present. Calls are missed, but I know there's only a small window I have for being an athlete, so that's definitely the priority. I have a couple of assistants and it's basically carrying my iPad all over, checking my emails and stuff like that. Hopefully the business will keep getting better and better, and I can assign a general manager. The aim has always been for it to run itself." RETIREMENT AND RETURN
She retired from competitive athletics in 2016 due to injuries and financial concerns, but returned in 2018 after recovering from the injuries. "I just thought, 'There's no point in doing this'. It was heartbreaking. I'd missed the 2012 Olympics and was going to miss 2016 [the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro]. I'd got a lot of debt and it was too emotionally difficult to go through all the time. I was so done. I came back because I really believed I'd regret it if I didn't. I didn't want to look back and think, 'What if?'." (abigailirozuru.com, 08 May 2020; athleticsweekly.com, 30 Oct 2019)
