She began running as a child. "I did fairly well in cross-country running [at school] but usually I was in the top three to five, rather than the winner. I also attended running sessions at Victoria Park Athletic Club in Glasgow [Scotland], along with my younger sister. It was the social side and the fun of running with friends and family that appealed to me. I carried on running when I went to Edinburgh University and joined the Hare and Hounds club. When she moved to London, England, for work after university, she joined Clapham Chasers. Her partner James then decided to run the 2018 Berlin Marathon in Germany. "I thought I would join him and some other runners. We did some random races before Berlin. By coincidence, I met my coach, Phil Kissi, while training. She ran the Olympic qualifying standard for the marathon 15 months after making her marathon debut, in Berlin, Germany. At the 2019 London Marathon in England, she ran from the mass start. "Berlin in autumn 2018 was my first marathon. And definitely back then I was never thinking I'll be going to the Olympics in three years' time. When I was younger I did shorter distances and some cross-country. I wasn't terrible but I definitely wasn't on the podiums at national level. Back then I never thought I'd be getting to this level. I just didn't think it would be possible. It just shows you that everyone's journey is different. And if you just put in the hard work, and when the time is right for you, then it can happen." LIMITED MILEAGE
After suffering a hip injury during training for the 2019 London Marathon, she reduced her weekly training mileage to 60-70 miles. "The hip injury taught me that I was better not being a high-volume athlete on the running miles side, so I tend to focus a lot on keeping my mileage around 60 to 70 miles a week and then I do a lot of cross-training. I used to think running huge miles in training was important. Now I have learned to listen to my body. I never thought I would be a role model, but hopefully I can let people know that you don't have to focus on crazy miles. You can have a balance with running and cross-training. OCCUPATION
She works part-time as a corporate access specialist at an asset management company. "I don't do number crunching as I'm on the admin side - my official title is corporate access specialist. I did sports science at university so I'm not qualified to give financial advice. What has worked so far is that I work three days a week and I have the two extra days to focus on running, to help with the recovery. I find that's a really good balance for me. [It] gives me a change in focus, routine and social interaction away from training. It helps me not be all consumed by running all the time."
