In 2015 chronic shin splints sidelined him for 18 months. He returned to training in September 2016. (nzherald.co.nz, 10 Aug 2017)
:
He joined Roskill South Athletic Club in Auckland, New Zealand, at age nine as a runner. He also hurdled before turning his focus to the high jump at age 17 while at Auckland Grammar School. "I was busting a gut doing the 300m hurdles and other running events, but I was not super fond of being tired. I'd tried out a little at the high jump and I was doing just as well [as in the 300m hurdles]. It was then I thought, why am I doing this? My future isn't as a runner." (robertwalters.co.nz, 08 Mar 2019; nzherald.co.nz, 10 Aug 2017)
:
He initially took up the high jump due to his height. "It had to be this or basketball didn't it? But my focus hasn't always been on high jump. In secondary school I focused more on running than high jump. Up until the age of 18, I'd never won a national title in high jump and then I won three in one season. But even after that, I didn't compete again for about 18 months. I moved to Palmerston North [New Zealand] and Anne Thompson, the coach there, didn't put pressure on me but she kept in touch with me every week. My priority at the time was university studies. Then, when I had a year left on my degree, my priorities changed and I decided to push myself with high jump again. I knew that once I had my degree, nobody could take that away from me. So then I thought, 'All being well, my brain isn't going to degrade for many years but my legs are'. High jump is something I love. Something I'm good at. So high jump became my priority."
