FATHER'S DEATH
Her father died in January 2018. When she races she wears a necklace with the date of his death on it. "When my dad passed away, getting back into it was probably the hardest part, finding that motivation again and even having the spirits to train. It took me out of that college mindset, it took me into reality if that makes sense. It told me that life is real, and you need to make the best of it and take things a lot more seriously than you do now because anything can happen, at any time. I know he's always at the finish line and I'm running to him." (olympics.nbcsports.com, 07 Aug 2019; milesplit.com, 25 Jul 2019)

WEIGHT LOSS
When Edrick Floreal took over as the University of Texas athletics coach in June 2018, he put her on a weight loss programme. Between then and July 2019 she lost about nine kilograms. "It's been a long, long journey, but it was really just dedication. I had to really dedicate myself and now [2019] I'm in the best shape of my life. What he took away from me was negativity and doubting myself." (teamusa.org, 26 Jul 2019)
