He began running when he was in the ninth grade at school in Canada. "I joined Speed River Track and Field Club [in Guelph, ON, Canada] in grade nine and my coach Jeff Haller gave me a really good foundation, which made me fall in love with the grind and pursuing success in the sport." He initially played ice hockey at school before switching to running. "I loved playing hockey, and my life definitely revolved around the sport for a very long time. It just eventually got to the point where in high school if you weren't moving up into the better leagues, then there wasn't really anywhere to go with the sport.
