She competed in gymnastics until age 13, when she broke a vertebra in her lower back. After some time off sport, her parents encouraged her to try athletics, and she took up pole vault at age 16 while at high school in London, ON, Canada. "I grew a little tall at the age of 13, and [doing gymnastics] for about 30 hours a week, that's never easy on the body, and I ended up fracturing my L5 vertebra." Her school English teacher called her mother and suggested athletics. She started with hurdles, then tried pole vault. "When we are running [in to vault], you don't use your arms. It's really awkward and it feels different. And then I went to my first meet and I jumped the meet record. And they were, like, 'Well, it chose you'. And so I stuck with it. As a child, I always wanted to fly and [pole vault] was one way that I could fly high. And so the higher I get, the more I fly and I think, 'I get to fly every day and I feel like a superwoman'."
