In 2015 he underwent surgery after suffering a stress fracture to the navicular and talus bones in his foot. He also developed an osteophyte [bone spur] and bone chips in his foot that had to be shaved and removed. The surgery led to him missing the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
