"I played soccer and basketball until I realised my hand-eye co-ordination was lacking. Ski racing was also a big one for my family when I was growing up. We were always at Big White [in British Colombia, Canada] on the weekends. I would occasionally run, but it wasn't until high school that I was involved in a competitive way." "I'm a huge believer in the power of sport to unite and inspire, but the mountaintop moments that bring us together can't happen without the years spent toiling in the valleys, far away from the spotlight." (Instagram profile, 05 Jul 2021)

OTHER ACTIVITIES
After visiting North India with his family in 2011, he became the chairman and director of the Child of Mine charity that supports children's homes in the region. Gay's father travels to India for a month every year and he joined his father there in October 2019. "I took part in the children's daily routines. I did chores, helped prepare meals and played games. They also had their annual track and field day while I was there and, to take part in that and see the joy that comes with the sport, really rekindled an appreciation for it in me. It was just amazing to see how universal the language of sport is. As more and more of these children grow up and their ambitions continue to grow, so do the financial demands to see them through their education and a Canadian dollar goes a lot further in India than it does in Canada." In late 2020 he organised the Mile by Mile fundraising event where he invited people to donate one dollar to the charity for every mile they ran that day. "It can seem like such an inconsequential sum if you're going for a three-mile run but, when you multiply that by all the people getting out of the door, it can add up so quickly." FURTHER STUDIES
After completing a degree in international relations at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, BC, Canada in 2018, he went on to study for a master's degree in business management at the UBC Sauder School of Business in Vancouver, BC, Canada.
