RIO DISAPPOINTMENT
He crossed the line in fourth place in the 50km walk at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, but was then promoted to the bronze medal position after Japanese athlete Hirooki Arai was disqualified for making contact with him. Arai appealed, claiming that it was actually him that had been impeded, and was reinstated. Dunfee advised the Canadian team against making a counter-appeal and accepted his fourth-place finish. "Not many people can understand the pain athletes are in three-and-a-half hours into such a grueling race. I believe that both the Japanese athlete and myself got tangled up but what broke me was that I let it put me off mentally and once I lost that focus, my legs went to jello. Contact is part of our event, whether written or unwritten and is quite common, and I don't believe that this was malicious or done with intent. Even if an appeal were successful I would not have been able to receive that medal with a clear conscience and it isn't something I would have been proud of. I will sleep soundly tonight, and for the rest of my life, knowing I made the right decision." (athletics.ca, 19 Aug 2016)

VOLUNTEERING
He has worked with a number of charitable organisations in Canada, including 'KidSport' and 'Head to Head'. "Sport has been instrumental in shaping me into the person I am today. To have the opportunity now to give back and help get more kids playing sport so that they may be afforded all the same opportunities that this runty, bespectacled, uncoordinated, curly haired ginger had to grow and learn is the legacy I want to leave. I am the person I am today because of sport and I believe that no kid should lose out on the opportunity to participate because of financial reasons."
