He switched from running to race walking. "My running technique was through the heel. And my first coach immediately said, 'Either you will be a marathon runner or you will switch to race walking'. In the eighth or ninth grade [at school], I ran a steeplechase, and with my height it looked strange when I jumped the high barriers. There, another coach noticed me and suggested I go to a training camp with race walkers.
