An athletics club was the closest sports club to his home. He became motivated to improve in the sport after his first competition. "I wanted to play football, but I had to get up very early and go across the city by tram. My parents could not take me there, and I was too young to travel there myself. I saw a guy who was shorter than everyone else, but had some of the best results. He took second place with a result of 1.85m, despite being 163 centimetres tall. His name was Roman Matveev.
