He played football from an early age and only took up athletics after being encouraged by his friends to attend a try-out. "'Athletics is for crazy people, why should I do a try-out?' I said to my friends. But they insisted and kept teasing me, so I gave in and went to do the try-out. I attended wearing my football boots. At the time I did not have other athletic clothes.
