CHANGING DISTANCE
He switched to competing in the 50km event in 2021, having previously competed in the 20km. "I had the change in mind for some time, but there was always something in my way. It was not easy to change the distance. I had to change my training. More oxygen training, and longer distances. The main difference is the tempo, you generally get an extra 30 seconds per kilometre. That meant I was comfortable keeping my speed over the distance. Everything else was a matter of hard training." In March 2021, he completed the distance in a competitive race for the first time at an event in Dudince, Slovakia, where he also achieved the qualification standard for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. "It cost me a lot, I had to fight a lot, especially at the end. I was not aware that most of the distance is a battle with yourself - it simply destroys you."
