He originally played football while in middle school, but his teacher encouraged him to get involved in athletics when he entered high school as he was good at long-distance running. When he was determined to continue a sporting career at university, the teacher who was in charge of the athletics team suggested that he focus on the 3000m steeplechase to achieve the best results possible.
