Her physical education teacher introduced her to athletics coach Renzo Chemello. "I noticed at age nine I was running faster than others, but for a long time I tried to escape it as I was shy and did not want the others noticing me. Sprinting put me in the spotlight. I chose volleyball and music. Then at age 17 I gave in and after three months at a camp [with Chemello] I was on the podium at the Italian junior championships."
